SUMMARY:Stonewall Riot Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:On June 28th\, 1969 in New York City\, the Stonewall Inn became a place of riot and protest for discriminatory treatment of LGBTQIA+ folks by police officers.  The anniversary of this event grew into the first LGBTQIA+ Pride\, and the naming of June as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. \nThe intersection of systemic violence against marginalized populations directly impacts how we as a culture treat people who are seen as different.  Systemic violence trickles down into domestic and sexual violence\, and those who experience oppression by society are likely to experience inter-personal and intimate partner violence at higher rates. \nFor this year’s anniversary of Stonewall\, NCEDSV has partnered with several notable LGBTQIA+ organizations to host a panel discussion in the importance of recognizing systemic violence in order to end domestic and sexual violence.  We will be joined by The Gay and Lesbian Center of Las Vegas\, Henderson Equality Center\, Gender Justice Nevada\, Our Center\, and the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico to get input from the LGBTQIA+ community on how we can move forward in ending domestic and sexual violence by addressing and ending systemic violence.

SUMMARY:Training - Opening the Door: Believe Our Truth
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register now \nDescription \nJoin the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCEDSV) in our efforts to increase awareness of abuse against adolescents and young adults for this one session virtual webinar. This presentation will give attendees a basic understanding of disabilities and how adolescents and young adults with developmental disabilities are targeted for abuse. \nAppropriate intervention strategies will be shared to improve communication between the survivor and the advocate. In addition\, tips will be offered to help supporters for people with disabilities understand the effects and consequences of trauma. Best practices will be highlighted to ensure people with developmental disabilities are receiving survivor-centered\, trauma-informed assistance that promotes healing. \nRegistration ends Friday\, April 22 at 3:00PM. Social work and batterer’s treatment CEUs (2.0 hours) are currently pending. \nObjectives – The participant will be able to: \n1. Define the term developmental disability and how it differs from other disabilities. \n2. Review and identify the key elements of domestic violence and how young adults with disabilities may become targets for abusive behavior and how the risk factors and warning signs may differ. \n3. Identify at least 3 accommodations that will increase communication between the survivor with developmental disabilities and the advocate. \n4. Apply their current knowledge and skills to a young adult survivor with unique needs. \n5. Explain the similarities and differences for issues affecting young adults with developmental disabilities such as confidentiality\, mandated and self-reporting. \n6. At times\, these differences form barriers to services and the goal is to create a collaborative effort between community and systems-based domestic and sexual violence agencies as well as agencies such as an independent living center and/or adult protective services\, etc. \n7. Review a list national\, state\, and local resources that will help the advocate learn more about offering appropriate trauma-informed services.
